NEWCASTLE, England (AP)— Partizan Belgrade upset English side Newcastle on Wednesday to earn a place in the main phase of the Champions League.
Partizan advanced after winning a penalty shootout 4-3.
The Serbs won the match 1-0 on Ivica Iliev's goal in the 50th minute to draw the two-legged tie even on aggregate 1-1.
Newcastle won the away leg two weeks ago 1-0.
After a scoreless overtime, Partizan won the shootout 4-3 as England captain Alan Shearer, Kieron Dyer and Jonathan Woodgate missed their attempts. It was 2-2 after five penalty attempts.
In sudden death, Partizan scored both of its attempts and Newcastle scored only one.
The loss could cost Newcastle about 18 million pounds (US$29 million) in revenue, but will be a windfall for Partizan.
The Serbian champions scored in regular time when Albert Nadj chipped the ball into the box. Sasa Ilic rolled a pass to Iliev in front of goal, and he made no mistake to score.
Newcastle is also off to a slow start in the league after losing last weekend 2-1 at Man United at Old Trafford. The Magpies have only one point in two league games.
